Marvel Comics

In 1939 Martin Goodman created Timely Comics, the first comic book was Marvel Comics no. 1. This comic book featured many superheroes, like Human Torch and Sub-Mariner. In many of the comics were portrayed as fighting the Nazis and Japanese before the US even entered WW2. Many of the Timely Comics characters were introduced during the “Golden Age” of comics. In 1950 Timely Comics canceled the last of its books in the comic genre, but in 1951 Goodman created his own company. In 1951 Timely Comics became Atlas Magazines, then in the early 1960s Atlas became Marvel Comics. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Marvel switched owners many times, eventually becoming bankrupt due to questionable management in 1996. In 1998 Marvel Comics defeated bankruptcy and began to be more diverse, with launching imprints, and expanding its cinematic offerings. In 2007 Marvel began publishing digital comics, and in 2009 Walt Disney Company bought Marvel Comics.

Martin Goodman and Stan Lee

Martin Goodman (pictured left) is the very first publisher of Marvel Comics, he co-founded Marvel with Stan Lee (pictured right). Together Stan Lee and Martin Goodman co-created more than 150 Marvel characters.

Captain America

In 1941 Captain America Comics #1 debuted the new superhero named Captain America, he was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. A couple decades later Stan Lee and Jack came together to bring Steve Rodgers back to life and make him a man out of time, he returned in The Avengers #4. Captain America has appeared in 11 films, and 2313 comics.

Spider-Man

Spider-Man was created by 3 different people. Stan Lee came up with an idea to create a young “ordinary” teenage hero, so he took his idea to the head artist Jack Kirby. After Jack created a look for Stan’s idea, Stan thought it looked too “heroic”, this is where Stan stopped working with Jack. Stan took his idea to Steve Dikto, this is where we get the Spider-Man that we know and love. Spider-Man appears in 6 films and 7,095 comics.

Other Characters

Stan Lee is the creator of many Marvel Character like The Fanatic Four, Spider-Man, Hulk, Ironman, Thor, Loki, The X-Men, Daredevil, Nick Fury, Scarlett Witch, Black Panther, Hawkeye, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, The Wasp, Groot, and Black Widow. Eventually most of these characters teamed up to become The Avengers.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a franchise that brought the Marvel Comics to live-action films. The first movie that came out was Ironman in 2008. The MCU currently has 27 movies out, and has 6 movies scheduled to come out. The MCU also has 6 other movies that correlate to Marvel, and 5 TV shows released and 1 coming out in June 2022.
